Affiliated Associations

BACKGROUND HISTORY
Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS) initiated Affiliated Association activities in mid-70s. It was set up with a unique model of community participation, local level leadership and autonomy, and friendly supervision and monitoring through a flexible system of affiliation. The growth in number of Affiliated Associations was slow in the beginning- 5 by 1980 and 11 by 1985. However, it became a popular movement in the last three decades with 46 AAs up to 1999. By 2007, the number increased to 60 including Sub-affiliated Associations. In 2012, 3 new Sub-AAs were formed and have been actively involved in prevention and awareness of Diabetes Care Delivery. Now, BADAS has 61 Affiliated Associations and 19 Sub-affiliated Associations.
Decentralized healthcare system was absolutely required for this purpose. However, public hospitals and healthcare centres didn't have adequate services for diabetic patients, particularly in peripheral areas. Realizing the importance of decentralization, the Association took the decision.
