What is Diabetes ?

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition that arises when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot use the insulin produced effectively.

Most of our food intake is turned into glucose, a form of sugar, for our bodies to use for energy.

The pancreas, an organ near the stomach, produces a hormone called insulin, which enables our muscles and other tissues to absorb glucose from the blood. Without insulin your body cannot get the energy it needs from your food.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition that arises when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot use the insulin produced effectively.

As a result, the person cannot use the glucose in the food he or she eats. This can lead to abnormal blood glucose levels.

Brief History of The Diabetic Association of Bangladesh

DAB ( Diabetic Association of Bangladesh) is a nonprofit voluntary socio-medical organization registered with the Ministry of Social Welfare under the Society's Registration Act, 1860. It is run by a 29 member National Council.

It was established on 28th February 1956 in Dhaka at the initiative of the late National Professor M Ibrahim and a group of social workers, philanthropists, physicians and civil servants. Over the years, the clinic has turned into a diabetes care and research complex at Shahbag, Dhaka, which, after the demise of Prof M Ibrahim in 1989, has been renamed as the Ibrahim Memorial Diabetes Center.
