Prevention of Diabetes and Its Complications

The Major Focus of BADAS

Diabetes Awareness Day is observed on the Foundation Day of the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh. The day is featured with Different programs like: rally at Shahbag, free diabetes screening at different places of Dhaka city, discussion session between selected diabetic patients and specialized physicians, Free heart camp at Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital etc. Diabetic Association of Bangladesh also brought-out a special issue of `Kanti' and published a Poster & a Leaflet for awareness creation.

Initiating Awareness Symposium for the healthcare providers

Awareness symposiums on Management & Prevention of GDM in Bangladesh were organized at the Institute of Child and Mother Health (ICMH), Dhaka; Rajshahi Medical College, Rajshahi; MAG Osmani Medical College, Sylhet & Kumudini Womens' Medical College, Tangail. Through the awareness symposium, 1250 health professionals were covered for building awareness on GDM equipped with appropriate BCC strategies targeting mass people but focusing especially on health professionals and social activists.

Mass awareness campaign activities:

For the mass awareness programmes, road side musical & cultural shows on open vehicles touring around various places is designed. During the year 04 regional folk festival were organized with the songs to impart the message on GDM. For creating awareness, thousands of leaflets were circulated among mass people in various spots who attended the roadside shows.

55 awareness campaign during the period were organized. The ideal diabetic patients were awarded with crest. BIHS, NHN and Ibrahim Cardiac also took up several programs in this regard.For prevention of Diabetes and TB, a project Challange TB Care has been extended for another 5 years.

Special Sympsium highlighting the service motto of Professor Ibrahim "No diabetic patient shall die unfed, untreated and unemployed even if poor", Rally and Free Blood Suger Screening and Medical Service to diabetic patients were the major focus of the Diabetes Awareness and Prevention Day.

BADAS is Implementing the following programmes for prevention

Screening for diabetes and related cardiometabolic risks at work places in Bangladesh This study is the part of Diabetes Prevention Program in Work Places (DPWP),an ongoing diabetes prevention program of Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS).

Main objective:

To establish a model surveillance system with special focus on diabetes and related cardiometabolic risks for industrial workers in Bangladesh.

Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs)

held in Bogra on 23rd May 2015. Discussion sessions were arranged in 4 groups. Around 1200 physicians and Health workers attended this workshop.
Patient Education: The Health Education Department of BIRDEM, the centre of excellence of BADAS has trained 651 newly detected diabetes patients, GDM and IGT cases along with their family members for self care at the time of registration as new patients, through lectures and audio-visual aids during this period.
Prevention of Foot Complications: During this period 319 patients were enrolled and 71 patients were detected as "high risk foot" patients.
Comorbidity" was held in May 2015, organized by TB Care-II Project of BADAS, successfully. Around 300 physicians and Health workers have attended the program.
Flip Chart, Manual and Picture cards were developed to conduct womens' group meeting by the Perinatal Care Project of Diabetic Association of Bangladesh.
With the colleboration of Government of the Peoples' Republic of Bangladesh, USAID, FAO, UNICEF and Daibetic Association of Bangladesh has produced the plate design, concept of dietary pattern of pregnant mother and the National Dietary Guidelines.

Regional Workshop for Prevention of DM

Regional Workshop was held at Rangpur on 29th April 2015. Doctors and health professionals from different Affiliated Associations of Rangpur Region participated in this workshop. The major theme of this workshop was "Prevention, Management and Control of Diabetes at an early stage"

Prevention of Diabetic Eye Complication

A total number of 1,39,441 persons have been screened, 81,201 persons clinically treated and 8000 surgeries including 923 laser sessions have been performed. A total number of 20,000 people were educated on protecting their sight and 27,11,699 people were informed on protecting their sight, through different interpersonal, outdoor and mass media communication.
Through Community mobilization, a Behavior Change Cadre have been involved to increase awareness on Diabetic Retinopathy screening among the diabetic. A total no of 93 Out ReachCamps have been organized.
