Strengthening Eye Care Project

Bangladesh Diabetes Somiti and ORBIS International are jointly implementing a project entitled ‘Strengthening eye care capacity in the peripheral hospitals of Bangladesh Diabetic Somiti with emphasis on diabetic retinopathy services’. The goal of the project is to contribute in the prevention of blindness due to Diabetic Eye Diseases, especially Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), by establishing clinical management (including surgery) services and, at the same time, organizing primary and secondary preventive measures through community awareness, focused intervention and generation of appropriate tools for health promotion. The project has already started functioning in Thakurgaon district, but there is a plan to extend it to Bogra and Dinajpur gradually. Through this project the capacity and skilled human resource will be developed at the Sub-regional Hospitals and Peripheral Health Centers. Within 2012 it is estimated that around 110,000 diabetic patients will be examined for diabetic eye diseases, 30,000 eye patients will receive surgical and LASER treatment including approximate 8000 cataract surgeries and 14,000 LASER treatment.
