Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital & Research Institute (ICHRI)
Training Course on Cardiac Nursing
A 3 month long 'Training Course on Cardiac Nursing has been organized for professional development of Nurses. During the year two courses have been completed where 40 participants successfully completed the course. Lt. Col (Rtd) Dr. Md. Hamidur Rahman, Head of Anaesthesiology was the chief course coordinator/ adviser and Ms. Ayesha Siddiqua, Deputy Nursing Superintendent performed as course coordinator.

Diploma in Cardiac Nursing Course
Session 2014-2015 (3rd batch)
Diploma in Cardiac Nursing Course (Duration - 01 year) for the session 2014-2015 (3rd batch) under Bangladesh Nursing Council has been completed. 18 Students appeared in the final examination which has been conducted centrally by Bangladesh Nursing Council. The result of the final examination to be published soon.

Session 2015-2016 (4th batch)
Classes of Diploma in Cardiac Nursing for the session 2015-2016 have been started from August 2015. Total 20 students are participating in the course of which 09 students from in house and 11 students from other non-government organizations.

Hands on Nursing Training for ventilated patients
A 02 week hands on nursing training for ventilated patients had been introduced in 2014. Total 30 Staff Nurses have participated in 1st, 2nd & 3rd batches which have been conducted by ICHRI's own management. The classes of 4th batch will be started soon.

Perinatal Care Project (PCP)
A Six day Training of Trainers (ToT) on Community Mobilization for the Women's Group Coordinator, Women's Group Supervisors and District Manager that was held from 09 September to 14 September, 2014 at Bogra office. A Four day refresher training on Community Facilitation Manual for women's group was held and coordinator, women's group supervisors and Volunteer Facilitators at Upazila level in Bogra have participated.

Extension of Diabetic Care (EDC)
As a part of manpower training, 309 doctors successfully completed Certificate Course on Diabetology in Batch A to Q. All Affiliated Associations are requested to nominate potential GPs for the course from their locality. A three member team has been formed to visit the chamber of GPs at Thana level.

Strengthen providers' capacity in TB-DM diagnosis & case management
Capacity building is a pre-requisite for improving early case detection and provide quality services. So to achieve the objective - 2 the project has been operational for providing various types of trainings. During the reporting period 98 medical doctors have been trained on TB-DM co morbidity management through a 3 day long training program while 149 doctors have also been oriented through a day long orientation program on TB-DM co morbidity management.
In the mean time 375 nurses and 353 other health staff have also been oriented on TB diagnosis among DM patients respectively through a day long orientation program. Total 19 Lab Technicians have been trained on AFB microscopy through a 6 day long training program. The training was organized with collaboration of Microbiology department of Ibrahim Medical College. The awareness which has been built during the project period among doctors, nurses and other health workers will be active to fight against TB even beyond the project period.

Department of Diet and Nutrition

  • Internee Training of the students from Bangladesh Home Economics College & National Home Economics College were held in BIRDEM.
  • Department of Endocrinology and Pulmonology Presently MD & Diploma (Endocrinology & Metabolism) courses are running at BIRDEM academy under Dhaka University. In the year 2014-2015, 6 MD (EM) students & 5 Diploma (EM) students are placed.
  • Doctors from different affiliated center of Diabetic Association of Bangladesh are trained under this dept. for practical management of diabetes.

Department of Pediatrics and Neonatology

Nursing Training
  • Six Nurses participated one day Training program on the Management and Prevention of GDM in Bangladesh in the Auditorium of the Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS).
  • One Nurse participated in 2 day 'TOT program on Clinical Management of Dengue / DHF in the conference Room of Directorate General of Health, Mohakhali, Dhaka.
  • Two Nurses participated in a one day Training Program on Emergency Management of severe Burn (EMSB) in Bangladesh. Venue BCPS, Dhaka.
  • Five Nurses attended Training Program on "Avian Influenza -A HINI Evo,organized by DG Health, Venue IEDCR.
  • Sixty nine Nurses attended Training program on "Infection control program (ICP) and Inservice Education Program in seven batches at BIRDEM
Department of Ophthalmology
  • Workshop on 'Quality Child Eye Health through enhancing national Capacity on Paediatric Ophthalmology' was held at Gulshan on 16th September 2014.
  • Workshop on 'OSPE (Objective Structured Practical Examination' was held at BCPS, on 13th October to 15th October 2014.
  • Workshop on 'VISION 2020' was held at Spectra Convention Center, Gulshan, on 20th October 2014.
  • Workshop on 'National Eye Care Strategy' was held at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on 1st December 2014.

Department of Microbiology

Laboratory training to doctors, medical technologists, paramedics of the hospitals and allied institutions were organized by this Department.

Department of Histopathology & Cytopathology

MD residency course in Pathology under the faculty of Basic Science & Para Clinical Science of BSMMU are taught here. The teaching staffs of the department are actively involved in teaching (theory & practical) and conducting examinations of the students.

Department of Immunology
  • Received application training on a real time PCR analyzer (Roche Light Cycler 480 v.2) that is used in Life Science lab for research and development work on February 2-5, 2015.
  • Received training from Molecular/Cancer diagnostic kit manufacturer, TIB MOLBIOL at their LightCycler application laboratory in Berlin, Germany, on Roche Light Cycler 480 II instrument, programming and operation, Theory : Genotyping using melting curve analysis, Practical part : HLA B27 genotyping and interpretation of the results on May 6-8, 2015,
  • Completed a course of using EliGene diagnostic including principles and workflow of EliGene real-time PCR and DNA isolation kits, set-up of qPCR, evaluation of data & troubleshooting support for Spondylitis HLA-B27 RT, EliGene HCV LC, EliGene HBV UNI, RT in the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic on May 11-13 2015.
Department of Critical Care Medicine (CCM)

Ten (10) workshops were conducted on Basic (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life (ACLS) Support (CPR) with total 225 participants comprising doctors & nurses from BIRDEM & outside.

BIRDEM Academy

Honorary Training for Doctor BIRDEM Academy organizes training of Medical graduates as an Honorary Medical Officer (HMO) in different clinical department. In session 2014-15 a total number of 69 (Sixty Nine) doctors had been recommended to join as HMO.

Laboratory Training

BIRDEM Academy introduced Laboratory training programme under Research Cell in different laboratory under laboratory Services. Students of Medical technology, Dental Technology, Physiotherapy, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, MBBS, M.Phil or PhD can participate in 01 week, 01 Month or 06 Months Laboratory Training.

Training in Nutrition Department

BIRDEM Academy organized one month training for B.Sc/M.Sc students of Food & Nutrition. A total number of 05 students got training in the year 2014-15.

Training Selection Committee (TSC)

BIRDEM Academy organizes meeting of Training Selection Committee (TSC) and recommends for deputation, study leave and Leave without pay for the employees of BIRDEM General Hospital. A total number of 04 (four) doctors got deputation and 12 (twelve) doctors got leave without pay in the year 2014-15.

Internship Training for MBBS Doctor

BIRDEM Academy organizes Internship Training for MBBS Doctor of Ibrahim Medical College (IMC) and other Medical College. 96 doctors were completed their one year compulsory Internship Training in the year 2014-15.

Combating GDM
Conducting Training Programs
The training programs on Management and Prevention of GDM has been conducted over the last two years from the initiation of the project to build up awareness capacity of the health professionals. The primary target groups of the programs are health care professionals/ personnel involved in the clinical care and prevention of GDM. For capacity development, relevant specialists in Obstetrics & Gynecology (mainly for sensitizing them to follow a standardized protocol), general physicians, nurses/health educators and community based health workers are being trained with appropriate tools.

A wider community of Bangladeshi population will be benefited in this project through the improved knowledge and skill gained by the trainees. More than 900 health care providers have been trained from 05 training programs organized in Dhaka (phase 1 & 2), Rajshahi, Tangail & Sylhet over the period. Around 2500 health care professionals are expected to be trained under the project in the coming years to ensure optimum medical services to mothers.
